In advance of this year’s Sports Emmy Awards, SVG is taking a deep dive into the six production-technologies nominated for this year’s George Wensel Technical Achievement Award.
When TMRW Sports set out to reimagine golf for a primetime audience, the mandate was clear: take viewers somewhere they had never been. With the SmartPin cam — a 360-degree camera embedded inside the flagstick on every hole at the SoFi Center — TGL presented by SoFi has done exactly that. Now, the innovation has earned the startup league (along with its broadcast partner ESPN) its first-ever Sports Emmy nomination in the George Wensel Technical Achievement category.
For Jeff Neubarth, VP, Content, TMRW Sports, the recognition is a milestone moment for a company that has just wrapped its second season on the air. The SmartPin cam, developed in partnership with SmartPin Golf and integrated alongside director Jonathan Evans and the TGL production team, took roughly 18 months of testing across sound stages in Orlando and Palm Beach before its on-air debut during a President's Day triple-header in Season One.
The miniature camera is mounted on a modified, rules-conforming flagstick that plugs into a connector at the bottom of the cup, delivering both power and ethernet via a single ferrule and feeding stitched, full-360 video back to the truck for live use and replay.
The payoff was immediate. From Lucas Glover's chip-in for the Atlanta Drive GC to the now-famous "Dr. Chipinski" hole-outs from Min Woo Lee, the SmartPin cam quickly proved itself as a storytelling tool rather than a gimmick.
In this conversation, Neubarth walks SVG through the technology's development, the production-team workflow that brought it to air, and how TMRW Sports plans to evolve the SmartPin cam — potentially shrinking the form factor for outdoor use — as the company looks ahead to the launch of WTGL.
